Ceremonial opening of the IOM offices in Istanbul mark the

Istanbul – The International Organization for Migration (IOM) in Turkey and the Consulate General of the Federal Republic of Germany in Istanbul were celebrating the launch of the “Family Assistance Programme (FAP) for Syrians” with the opening of a new IOM Family Assistance Programme service centre in Istanbul on Wednesday night.

The aim of the Family Assistance Programme, which was initiated by the German Federal Foreign Office, is to support applicants in Turkey and Lebanon during their visa application process and ensure they have all the documents required for their visa appointment. The project, financed by the German Federal Foreign Office, will be able to assist up to 35.000 families. In addition, the programme will provide German integration classes and distribute German integration information materials. All applicants are encouraged to get in touch with IOM prior to their appointment and visit one of the service centres. The project aims to dissuade Syrian families from seeking unsafe, irregular migration channels, to support German Consular staff, and to better prepare Syrian beneficiaries successfully integrate within German society.

In his opening speech, Consulate General Dr. Birgelen emphasized his hopes for the project: “From the outset, the German Federal Foreign Office sought new forms of cooperation and solutions to help Syrian families exercise their right of family reunification. The IOM ‘Family Assistance Programme’ is there to help applicants with all kinds of questions regarding their family reunification procedures. We are convinced that this is also an important step for ensuring quick and successful integration into German society.”

IOM Turkey Chief of Mission Lado Gvilava said: “As the region continues to suffer from the conflict, each year we see an increased demand for more resettlements and family reunifications.  It is an obvious fact that demand for legal migration options far exceeds the supply.  While I am heartened to see an increase in the number of resettlement places and for countries like Germany to commit to family reunifications programs, more must be done.  Governments, civil society and international organizations must work together to find safe, legal options for people fleeing violence rather than suffering the risks of irregular migration.“
