Glossary on Migration

ISBN / ISSN :   2074- 6709 / 2009

Migration is increasingly being acknowledged as an issue that needs a global approach and coordinated responses. States are not only discussing migration issues at the bilateral level, but also regionally and lately in global arenas. A commonly understood language is indispensable for such coordination and international cooperation to be successful. This glossary attempts to serve as a guide to the mire of terms and concepts in the migration field, in an effort to provide a useful tool to the furtherance of such international cooperation. This glossary has been some time in the making. Informal drafts were prepared by IOM in the seventies and used by its staff.

The Republic of Turkey - Migration Profile

ISBN / ISSN :   2008

Migration issues in Turkey are shaped by its efforts to become a member of the European Union (EU), which are creating pressures for an overhaul of its immigration and asylum policies. This is because the alignment of Turkey’s migration policy and practice with the EU migration acquis and policies is one of the conditions for the country’s accession to the EU. An issue of concern in Europe at present relates to the possible negative consequence of Turkey’s potential membership in the EU, that is, the probability of a massive wave of migration from Turkey to EU’s more prosperous members.
